Detail about the product
Amerigo Vespucci observed Indians chewing tobacco leaves in 1499 on Margarita Island off the coast of Venezuela. He noted that the Indians did so to whiten their teeth and soothe hunger (Heimann, 1960; Stewart, 1967; Voges, 1984). He also noted that the Indians did so to quench their thirst by increasing salivation.
By the late 1500s, chewing tobacco was a common practice in many parts of Central and South America (Voges, 1984). At Veragua, later known as Costa Rica, Columbus encountered individuals in 1571 who put a dry plant in their mouths and chewed it (Heimann, 1960). The sixteenth century saw reports of plug tobacco use in Santo Domingo.
Tobacco chewing seems to have been a widespread activity among the American Indians, especially \ when vast distances had to be traveled; it has been said that tobacco was support \ against hunger, thirst, and tiredness when an American Indian would trek for 2 or 3 days with \sno other support. With their tobacco, certain American cultures included lime or finely ground, burned freshwater, or saltwater mollusks (Curtis, 1935).
